STOP SV: A Technical Package to Prevent Sexual Violence
This “technical package” for the CDC is a compilation of a core set of strategies that are deemed likely to reduce the overall incidence of sexual violence based on the best available evidence. Organized by three components, strategy, approach and evidence, this collection was designed to help communities make informed decisions and prioritize their efforts.
Strategies and approaches are thematically organized across the social ecology (individual, relationships, families, schools, communities and social structures) with comprehensive and complementary activities that address gender norms and protective factors across the lifespan.
Many approaches that are highlighted focus on preventing perpetration, such as bystander intervention, mobilizing men and boys as allies, social emotional learning approaches, teaching healthy relationship skills and promoting healthy sexuality. Others address risk reduction, such as strengthening economic supports and leadership opportunities for women and girls. All strategies and approaches include evidence based rationales.
Also addressed in the publication are strategies for creating protective environments which includes improving safety and monitoring in schools and establishing and enforcing workplace policies. Finally, approaches to better supporting victims and lessening short and long term harm of sexual violence are outlined.
The technical package is intended as a resource to guide and inform prevention decision-making in communities and states, to assess current activities, and to identify areas to expand existing efforts.
