Virginia’s Building Healthy Futures Fund

“Every dollar invested in prevention not only changes the lives of individuals, but also saves literally hundreds of dollars in the costs associated with future violence.”  (Virginia Sexual & Domestic Violence Action Alliance, 2013)

Advocacy agencies addressing gender based violence in Virginia have developed the Building Healthy Futures Fund to support prevention efforts across the state. Agencies have been struggling to fund these important initiatives in the face of limited public funding, which is received by less than 1/3 of Virginia’s sexual and domestic violence programs.

The Building Healthy Futures Fund offers an opportunity for communities to work together to raise private dollars - to benefit everyone. The first initiative in their fundraising strategy is a specialized “peace begins at home” license plate. Available in Spring of 2014, Virginia residents can purchase these plates from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to support the prevention of sexual and intimate partner violence.
