Digging Deeper: Using a Social/Cultural Lens to Address Sexual Violence Prevention in Latina Communities.

Date:
Wednesday, 27 January 2021

The Multicultural Efforts to End Sexual Assault (MESA), in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Health, is pleased to announce a virtual conference titled “Digging Deeper: Using a Social/Cultural Lens to Address Sexual Violence Prevention in Latina Communities." This free, one-day, virtual conference will be held on Jan. 27, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The use of the term “Latina” is intended to reflect the broader understanding of the community. In many settings, MESA practices the use of Latinx or Latine to reflect gender inclusiveness. However, MESA recognizes that these terms are not universally embraced.

The conference will explore culturally appropriate ways to address sexual violence prevention within the Latina Community. This includes “digging deeper” into factors influencing sexual violence, including dismantling systemic institutions, promoting Latina leadership, enhancing economic empowerment, creating the foundation for community mobilization and organizing, and discussing the intersection or race, prejudice, and violence within the community.

The goal of this conference is to create a network for partnership development for community leaders and advocates to prevent sexual violence within the Latina community, ultimately strengthening these efforts in an under-engaged and marginalized population.
